Personal Tutor Role Description
Personal Tutors sit at the heart of the Integrated Pastoral Care Network at the University of Birmingham and are fundamental to the student experience. In principle, as many academic staff as possible within a given Department or School should be Personal Tutors, and the School Senior Tutor should ensure the equitable distribution of personal tutees among all academic staff. The role of a Personal Tutor is underpinned by the Code of Practice for Personal Tutoring, with which all Personal Tutors should be familiar.
Duties
- The key duties of a Personal Tutor are to:
- Meet with all newly registered tutees within the first two weeks of term;
- Develop a meaningful relationship with students throughout their time at the University of Birmingham;
- Meet regularly with their tutees, at least three times during the academic year;
- Make publicly available the times during which they are able to see students;
- Discuss with their tutees issues related to academic progress, skills acquisition;
- Understand where and how to signpost students to Welfare Tutors and other services, and how to support students through this process;
- Raise any issues pertaining to the Personal Tutoring System with the School’s Senior Tutor.
